Annual Fall Field Trip
Glacial Processes on the Avalon Peninsula
(Oct 3-4 Avalon Peninsula, staying at Hillside Cottages)
On this two-day overnight trip around the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland, we will visit an array of landform assemblages and erosional and depositional processes and deposits from Quaternary glaciation-Holocene deglaciation in the Conception Bay area. Integrated quaternary mapping between here, Nova-Scotia and New-Brunswick indicated ice flow from multiple spreading centres, a feature of the Appalachian Glacier Complex. The proximity of the multiple ice centres to their coastal outlets creates the ideal environment to observe the landform evolution from the ice centres to the current coastline. Stops will include conversations on glacial mechanics, framed in the context of isostatic processes and relative sea level variations.
